Geography of Scarlet Deer Inn beneath the village

Scarlet Deer Inn Caves and Underground

The caves are where Scarlet Deer Inn becomes a torch-driven labyrinth. After the pit fall from Karel’s apiary, Elise navigates braziers, levers, breakable floors, crates, toy finds, and light-chase creature pressure. This page orients space; the Underground Labyrinth walkthrough sequences objectives.

Entering via the pit

Treat the pit landing as a new region gate. Your village landmark memory still helps (loops, return doors, “hub vs wing”), but visual language shifts colder. Relight your habits immediately — doorway torch-up is law here.

Apiary transition: Karel’s Apiary.

Brazier hubs

Brazier clusters function as underground plazas. A good hub has:

  • Two or more permanent lights
  • At least one shortcut door potential
  • A readable exit toward progress
  • Optional side pocket for toys (rag doll / flute class finds)

If a wing has no lit hub, you have not finished prep.

Lever wings

Lever wings change gate states elsewhere. Before pulling, identify whether you are in a local door wing or a remote-signal wing. Remote levers are why backtracking exists; mark them mentally as “map editors,” not flavor props.

Breakable floor zones

These zones are vertical connectors and hazards. Inspect with torch. Map landings during calm time. During chase time, only use breaks you already understand.

Crate workshops

Some rooms are essentially crate classrooms: height, blocking, and toy hides. Leave helpful climbs intact when the puzzle allows. Crate workshops often sit adjacent to chase corridors — clear them before triggers.

Chase corridors

Chase corridors are long, memorable lanes with limited branching. Your job in calm exploration is to open a side return door so the corridor is not a pure tunnel during pursuit. Details: Survive Chase.

Toy pockets

Off-path alcoves hold childhood objects that make the Noon Witch story crueler later. Hunt in search windows only. Reference: Toys, tool: Collectible tracker.

Escape geography

Late caves reorient around escaping with Horace. The “correct” mental map becomes exit-weighted rather than curiosity-weighted. If a wing does not serve escape or a planned collectible, defer it.

Ending steps: Complete Ending.

How caves comment on the village

The underground is not a random biome. It is the village’s negative image: care replaced by pursuit, shelves replaced by crates, church dread made physical. When you recognize a loop shape that feels like an errand triangle, use it.

  • Feeling lost: return to last brazier hub, not the last interesting crate
  • Softlocked: look for alternate drop or shortcut; re-read labyrinth phases
  • Repeated chase death: your geography is incomplete — open doors first
  • Missing toys: you searched during danger windows

Achievement geography

Some of the ten Steam achievements likely fire on entering regions, surviving corridors, or escaping. Tick the achievement checklist when Steam confirms, using community-tracker caution.

Suggested mental labels

Give wings private names as you play: “first brazier hub,” “flute pocket,” “bad chase tunnel,” “Horace exit approach.” Personal labels beat generic “cave 3” memory after folklore scenes scramble focus.

The caves are solvable architecture wearing nightmare clothing. Light them, loop them, then leave with Horace — and with whatever toys you responsibly banked.

Naming wings as you go

Give each wing a two-word name on paper or in your head: “Twin Brazier,” “Flute Alcove,” “Bad Tunnel,” “Return Door.” The collectible tracker buckets pair naturally with those names.

Verticality literacy

Look up. Look down. Painted cliffs hide ledges; breakable floors hide connectors. A cave map that only stores left-right information will betray you during escape pressure with Horace.

Threat geography vs toy geography

Mark chase corridors as red and toy pockets as green in your notes. Never paint a room both colors until you have opened a shortcut that lets them coexist safely.

When the caves feel unfair

Usually the geography is incomplete, not cursed. Return to the last hub, open one more door, light one more brazier, then re-enter. Pair with Shortcuts.

Leaving the caves narratively

Escape is not only a door; it is a reorientation toward story consequence. After you leave, village pages read differently — that is intended. Use spoiler pages only when you want interpretation.
